November 23, 2009:  Some Norfolk sheriff’s deputies got a break from their usual duties Monday.  Instead of delivering summonses, they took turkeys and all the fixings to 150 families.  The turkeys were donated by Gateway Ventures, Inc., a defense contractor.

“Our company is very blessed.  We’ve grown over the years, even with the market being down.  And Thanksgiving is such a great holiday that we try to give back to the community as much as we can,” says Matthew Hales with Gateway Ventures.

The families receiving Thanksgiving fixings were identified through Norfolk elementary schools, Norfolk Social Services, the city’s Senior Triad Program and the Norfolk Sheriff Senior Watch Program.  The Sheriff’s office donated the stuffing, canned green beans, corn, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pies.

“There’s gonna be a lot of people happy to see a deputy.  A lot of times, they’re not happy to see a deputy, but they will today,” said Sheriff Bob McCabe. This is the first year Hales has teamed up with the sheriff’s office.  The Norfolk Sheriff Foundation has provided turkeys previously.

This year, with Hales donating the turkeys, the sheriff’s office employees decided to donate the other ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
